The Orpheus Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing string instruments, musical instruction books and instruction to children who need them.
The Foundation was incorporated in Pennsylvania in January 2013 by Orpheus Supertones, an old-time string band. The band consists of includes Kellie Allen, guitar, Hilary Dirlam, string bass, Pete Peterson, banjo, and Clare Milliner and Walt Koken, fiddles. The Foundation received 501(c)(3) status on June 10, 2014.
Orpheus Supertones play old-time music, based on older fiddle tunes and songs from North America, particularly the South, but also other places. The music has roots in Scotland, Ireland, Africa and Europe. Old-time music is not electrified, so it can be played anywhere. We have toured in the U.S., the U.K., and Australia performing and teaching old-time music.

Orpheus Supertones has been taking its “band retreat” on Great Exuma, Bahamas, for a number of years. In 2013, after inquiring on behalf of our bass player, we discovered that there was no string bass on the Exumas. Not only that, but we also learned that there were no string instruments (such as violins, cello, viola) in the school system at all. This, despite the fact that Exuma’s L. N. Coakley High School has an award-winning marching band under the direction of Corporal Perry Brice! After a nice visit with the high schoolers and Corporal Brice, he encouraged us to provide violins for the students. We formed the Foundation and started providing instruments to the children of the Exumas.
So far, we have focused on providing instruments, books and instruction to children in the Exumas of the Bahamas, where we have connections to the community. However, we have not limited our vision to one geographic region.
